Early Life and Career

Muddy Waters was born McKinley Morganfield on April 4, 1915, in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. He grew up in a sharecropping family, and he began playing guitar as a child. By the early 1930s, he was playing professionally at local juke joints.

In 1941, Waters moved to Chicago, Illinois, in search of a better life. He quickly made a name for himself on the city's South Side, playing in clubs and on street corners. In 1946, he recorded his first songs for Chess Records, and his career began to take off.

The Electric Blues

Waters was one of the pioneers of the electric blues, a genre that emerged in the postwar years. He was drawn to the electric guitar because it allowed him to create a louder, more powerful sound.
